What is World Labyrinth Day?

World Labyrinth Day is a day that brings people from all over the planet together in celebration of the labyrinth as a symbol, a tool, a passion or a practice.

World Labyrinth Day can be whatever you’re inspired to make it. A day to inform and educate the public, host walks, build permanent and/or temporary labyrinths, create labyrinth art and more.

If there are only right ways to walk a labyrinth, it follows that there are only right ways to celebrate World Labyrinth Day. We enthusiastically encourage you to "find your way.”

When Is World Labyrinth Day?
World Labyrinth Day is celebrated around the world on the first Saturday in May.

A committee of 18 discussed the date and the name for more than six weeks. We considered both Earth Days, International Peace Day, aligning with the two global days Veriditas offers, a Labyrinth Day already in place in Europe, New Years Day, New Years Eve, the Fall Equinox, the Spring Equinox, the Winter Solstice, the Summer Solstice, May Day and having it as part of the TLS Annual Gathering.

Anticipating that this event will grow, there was an intention to have it be a day that would be ‘good outside weather’ all over the world so people could have large outdoor walks. As the southern hemisphere is having winter when the northern hemisphere is  having summer, and vice versa we ruled out winter and summer which included a lot of the dates we were considering and narrowed our focus to fall and spring.

Board members with ‘gathering experience’ expressed a desire to be home for WLD to participate in their own community, which ruled out fall when the Annual Gathering typically is held. Having it always on a Saturday increased the likelihood that more people would be able to consistently participate.

In the end, it came down to the first or second Saturday in May. We put it to a simple vote and the first Saturday in May won out. A proposal was made to the TLS Board and it was unanimously approved.

Upcoming dates are: May 5th, 2012; May 4th, 2013.

Walk as One at 1
As part of this celebration you are invited to “Walk as One at 1” to effect a rolling wave of peaceful energy as the world turns. Walk in your local time zone at 1 PM. And consider a pledge to walk for another time zone. To find a walk in your location, visit the Event Calendar, select your region and browse monthly. Select May. All the walks in your area that have been entered into the Event Calendar for World Labyrinth Day will be listed at or near the top of the list.
